Child Safe Zone in Swindon

The Brunel joins national scheme to keep children safe in public places

The Brunel shopping centre in Swindon has announced that it will be joining the national ‘Child Safe Zone’ scheme, which aims to help keep children safe in public places.

The scheme, which has received strong support from ITV’s morning television programme GMTV, was first launched in May 2003 and can now be found in over 130 shopping centres around the country.

“We’re delighted to be joining the Child Safe Zone programme," commented Tony Wilkes, The Brunel Centre’s Centre Manager.

“As a popular shopping destination for thousands of families, we feel it’s important that we provide a safe environment that all the family can enjoy.

“As part of the scheme, children will be given a free wristband which safely and discretely contains their parent or carer’s contact details. If a child gets lost in a Child Safe Zone, their parent or carer can simply ring the number on the Child Safe Zone brightly coloured stickers and posters displayed around the centre.

"They will then have direct contact with the centre’s security team, who can assist with the search and ensure the child is returned quickly and safely. At the same time, the lost child can go into any shop displaying the Child Safe Zone posters and stickers and ask for help. Staff can then access the contact details on the child’s wristband and make sure the child is safely reunited with its family.”
